My long distance relationship story
Regarding long distance relationships, some will say yes! Some will say no! I will say read my story
Exactly 10 years ago today, I said “yes” to the man of my dreams and we began our relationship officially. It was a weird kind of relationship at that time; weird because I chose to be committed to a man who I had never met in my life, thanks to hi5! (who remembers hi5?). He was in far away Singapore while I was in Nigeria! We had both prayed about it and were convinced this was the path God would have us tread. We had only been best of friends for 6 months, chatting for at least 4 hours daily with several phone calls. He had become a part of my life.
Before connecting with this handsome young man who swept me off my feet, I had made a decision not to go into a relationship until I was at least in 4th year in medical school because I didn’t want any distractions; here was I in a relationship already only 2 months into medical school!
God’s ways are absolutely not our ways!
We shared similar values and I thought we were very compatible. He liked to talk a lot and I enjoyed listening
. He was so passionate about God and our relationship drew me even closer to God. He talked a lot about his vision and challenged me to be a better person. We would fast and pray together over the phone encouraging each other with God’s word. He was also very smart doing his Masters at a very young age! I couldn’t have picked a better husband for myself even if I tried
.
I had fallen in love with a man who was completely down to earth! He didn’t present himself to me as an angel, he had shared his past with me and I saw in him a man I could totally trust! With us, distance was not a barrier to the love we had for each other, in fact it was a blessing in disguise as we later found out
. We eagerly looked forward to the day we would finally get to see each other, unfortunately, things were very tough for him financially, he couldn’t afford the cost of the trip; he was working as a waiter at that time to support himself in paying his tuition in the university. Ours was a relationship of faith, we had no idea how God would make a way for us to meet but we pressed on.
I couldn’t tell most of my friends that I had never met this guy who I’m always on the phone with, they would think I was crazy!
I just kept all of it to myself. Sometimes I had to ask myself and ask God if there would be light at the end of this tunnel, He always reassured me. Our parents were the most supportive of our relationship, they are pastors, but had never met. Although my dad was initially against it and thought our relationship was a big joke
but God spoke to him just like the angel spoke to Joseph about Mary’s pregnancy. Amen, someborri…
My Prince Charming finally left Singapore for New Zealand for his PhD. He found out he would be sponsored to which ever part of the world he chose to collect his data for his programme. He didn’t think twice before choosing Nigeria! At least finally, he would be able to use this opportunity to meet the love of his life
So in 2010, we met for the first time, a memorable time in our lives. He spent only 3 months, which we did our best to maximise. Hormones almost got the best of us, thank God for God and boundaries
In 2012, I had the opportunity to visit him in NZ. No, I didn’t live with him ( #

To cut my love story short, we finally got married in May 2013 and God has blessed our union with two energetic and handsome boys. God has indeed been faithful to us. I am glad I submitted my will to His, else I might have missed His will for my life. I am grateful to God for the unusual pathway He used in leading me to the flesh of my flesh. I am grateful to God for strengthening my faith in Him even when the relationship looked bleak. I am grateful to God for blessing me with an amazing, wonderful, purpose driven, God-fearing, handsome and sweet young man as my husband.
If you let God write your love story by following His will, He will make your life beautiful. Choose to obey God in your relationship today!
