Valentine’s Day! So What?
While growing up, I always thought Valentine’s Day was all about lovers showering each other with gifts and nothing more… My Dad, though very spiritual took the day seriously. He was often romantic and would shower my Mum with gifts
.
Back in High School, lots of my friends got ‘val-ed’ on such days but not me. I used to feel somehow – you know like maybe I’m not attractive or beautiful enough. I used to ask myself why no one ever asked me out, let alone ‘val-ed’ me. Anywa y, fast forward to after High school, I met this guy online and we got talking, we became cool friends and decided to meet up the day after Val’s day. To my surprise, he showed up for me that year! Yay!!! Bought me lots of stuffs – chocolates, rose, a medical textbook
(because he knew I wanted to study medicine at the University), I appreciated this big time. Wait… That was not all he got me. He also got me an expensive alcoholic wine… GBAM! That was his undoing. I immediately disqualified him in my heart despite his affection, attention and all the other gifts.
Gosh
! Though this meant the world to me at that time because no guy had ever ‘val-ed’ me and all of a sudden, one guy decided to make me feel extra special! The next thing he wanted was to take me out that day, he had come to see me with another friend of his and I was so scared of going out with people I didn’t really know. Thank God my parents were around, I immediately used their presence as an excuse, I apologised to him profusely and dismissed him and his friend.
My point… Dear young lady, if you get ‘val-ed’ this Valentine’s Day; sweet! If you don’t, it is not the end of the world! Don’t let any man take advantage of you because of some gifts no matter the cost! Don’t do a trade by barter with your body on Valentine’s Day or any other day for that matter. That day will come and go and you would forever live with the consequences of the decision(s) that you made. Determine you will not be swayed by gifts, don’t lose your sanity all because of the craze that comes with Valentine’s Day.
Rather than sulking because you don’t have a guy who would ‘val’ you, get gifts and show love to those around you who don’t even have an idea of what Valentine’s Day means; show love to yourself by buying yourself a gift, get a card and address it nicely to yourself saying how amazing you are! You are beautiful because God made you beautiful! Don’t think less of yourself. The time is coming when the right man will locate you and buy you all sorts of amazing gifts not just on Valentine’s Day. I’m a living testimony
God bless you.
